STEVE LAVALLIN

Steve founded Wake Marine in 1985 and has led the company through more than a third of a century of ever-changing markets. He is a worldwide expert on the shipping of Bitumen and associated high heat cargoes. As such he provides advice and broking services to shipowners and charterers globally, covering the full range of buying/selling vessels, time and spot chartering and COA’s. Steve also keeps his hand in broking waste oil products, chemicals and CPP cargoes, mainly in the EMEA region.

He was a keen amateur jockey but these days limits himself to pottering around in boats!

HUW BURFORD-TAYLOR

Huw cut his teeth in the shipping world working on the restructuring of financially distressed fleets. While still in his mid-twenties he found himself responsible for the commercial operations of a fleet of 12 oil and chemical tankers. He then moved into broking and subsequently joined a larger broking company on their deepsea CPP desk. He joined Wake Marine nearly 10 years ago and now specialises in both clean and dirty petroleum products up to intermediate size in NWE. He also backs up the team with his experience broking in chemicals and bitumenmarkets.

Outside of work Huw enjoys anything with a bit of pace particularly cycling, skiing and (watching!) F1.

ANDY SWAN

After leaving school Andy enlisted with the Royal Navy and  travelled the world. Indeed when he is broking today he often is personally familiar with the ports he is dealing with, having entered them in a warship! With that start in life, Andy naturally wanted to remain in the marine world so joining a small London shipbroking company he worked his way up to running his own portfolio  of clients.

And some 13 years on in Wake Marine, Andy specialises in  clean and dirty tankers with a focus on 3-30kt sizes in North West Europe, Mediterranean and West Africa.

Originally from the North East of England, Andy is a passionate Newcastle United fan.

KATIE ROBERTS

Over a 25-year career, Katie has developed deep experience in shipping and trading operations. She started work in the London office of a leading international trading company, quickly moving into crude oil operations. She then worked for two very different shipowners, culminating in the position of Senior Tanker Operator. After further experience in Agency and Bunker trading, Katie’s last position before joining Wake Marine was Global Operations Manager and Head of Post Fixtures for a large London ship broker. In Wake Marine Katie heads up broking operations, working hard to ensure the smoothest possible implementation of the company’s charters.

When business and family permit, Katie enjoys a love for horses. In competing at international level in dressage, she shows the same passion for excellence that she brings to the office!

GUY HUDSON

Being raised on the island of Guernsey, the sea has always interested Guy and it is no surprise that he chose to study Marine Operations at university. He was soon applying his knowledge as a deck officer in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, responsible for navigation, sensitive cargo handling and other mission critical roles. A similar spell followed working on the tankers of an oil major, where he built his hands-on, global experience.

Guy is a keen traveller and after returning from seafaring, he managed commercial shipping operations from bases in The Netherlands, Guernsey, and the Eastern Med, accumulating formidable knowledge and qualifications along the way. He now applies that expertise to the benefit of Wake Marine’s Ship Owners and Charterers.

As well as playing football and hiking, Guy has a great interest in Fine Arts, having studied the subject at the C&G London Art School.

WILL GRAY

Will’s family were shipbuilders in the North of England, so it is a great pleasure for him to be making a career in shipping. After studying Psychology at university, he joined a major London shipbroker where he quickly qualified as a Chartered Shipbroker and began fixing vessels. His first broking areas of activity were in clean and dirty petroleum products, before being asked to set up a new desk for chemical products. From that foundation he spent some 10 years building a formidable shipbroking position in the worldwide chemicals and biofuels markets.

Will now brings that expertise to Wake Marine and, with his colleagues, looks forward to building the firm’s business in chemicals, biofuels and other markets.

In his free time Will plays football and likes to travel to places off the beaten track. He also enjoys watching others play rugby and NFL!

DAVID BARCLAY

David enjoyed a career in Shell working in the downstream businesses. He got his first taste of the marine world programming the company’s crude oil and products fleet against trading requirements. He also ran a very diverse bunker and marine lubricants business for the group, concentrating in the areas of the world less accessible to oil majors. After Shell, he ran speciality oil and chemicals company, Petrochem Carless. In Wake Marine David is non-executive director, overseeing the firm’s strategy and corporate processes.

Outside of work David is a keen golfer and enjoys swimming all the strokes!

Join our team

If you love ship broking and would like to consider joining the Wake Marine team please do get in contact with Managing Director, Steve Lavallin, for a confidential discussion. We are keen to recruit first class brokers with experience in the small tanker markets including Clean and Dirty Petroleum Products, Chemicals and Speciality Products, worldwide.

Wake Marine would particularly suit brokers who are keen to relocate outside of London for a better lifestyle. Our office is near the South Coast where great schools and fantastic leisure facilities abound. But we do work hard! We offer a combination of home and office working for brokers who have excellent  reputations for service, who can self-manage and have an entrepreneurial spirit.

There are also occasional vacancies for ambitious people earlier in their shipping careers, who feel they can build a portfolio of clients over time with the right training.

If either of these roles sounds like you, please call or email Steve Lavallin to explore possibilities confidentially.
